Vitamin levels and gum disease

The recommended daily allowance for vitamins and minerals were developed to prevent serious diseases and they’re actually quite low. If you’re fighting an infection like gum disease and you don’t have an ideal diet you may need to go above the guidelines in terms of dosages of vitamins and mineral. You may also have trouble absorbing vitamins due to gut issues.

Another problem is that the levels of vitamins in your blood or urine (when they test your vitamin levels) may not reflect the levels of vitamins in the parts of your body that actually need it. The levels of vitamins in your gums might still be low compared to your blood levels. Those vitamins are being used by your body to fight the infection and you may need to take more vitamins to ensure adequate levels in your gums.

Although serious harm from vitamin intake is very rare, it would be good to check with your doctor about vitamin supplementation if you intend to exceed the recommended doses to make sure it is done safely.
