The effect of Vitamin E supplementation on the treatment of gum disease.

Vitamin E is the body’s main soluble anti-oxidant. In gum disease conditions, reactive oxygen species are produced to fight infection. The excess reactive oxygen has to be neutralized by your body to prevent damage to your own tissue. Vitamin E acts as a protective role against gum disease by neutralizing reactive oxygen.

A study by Behfarnia in 2021 evaluated 16 patients with gum disease, half of whom were given Vitamin E supplementation up to 200 IU for up to 2 months.  Gum disease indicators like the pocket depth and the attachment of the gum tissue to the teeth was compared between the two groups.

It was found the Vitamin E supplementation in conjunction with dental scaling can reduce the inflammation in gum disease and decrease the loss of attachment of the gum tissue to the teeth, which is the main indictor of progressing gum disease.

There are 8 forms of vitamin e with the most active form of vitamin E being d-alpha Tocopherol . Synthetic vitamin E might be a mixture of forms that is chemically stabilized to ensure it doesn’t get degraded by the air.

It is the vitamin E that protects your own tissue from damage from oxygen oxidization. Just like butter, which contains mainly fat, can be spoiled with prolonged contact with oxygen, your body can be damaged by oxygen in a process called oxidation, and vitamin E is the main fat soluble antioxidant that protects you from damage.

It is actually hard to get even the very conservative recommended daily allowance of 30 IU of vitamin E by eating foods, so supplementation makes sense. Vitamin E supplementation strengthen blood vessels and prevent scar formation and reduce markers of inflammation like c-reactive protein that are usually elevated when you have gum disease.

The best natural forms of vitamin E come from wheat oil and whole grains seeds, and nuts and real butter.

A bonus application for vitamin E is that vitamin E can be applied to the surface of burns including sunburn to improve healing, and reduce scar formation

Vitamin E has an anti-aging effect due to its scavenging of free radical molecules that are damaging your body. because it’s an antioxidant.

Because vitamin E has anticoagulant qualities if you are taking anticoagulant medication, you should consult your doctor before supplementing with vitamin E
