Resistant to antibiotics….but not natural herbs!

Most gum disease causing bacteria are resistant to antibiotics but not to the antibacterial effect of natural herbs according to this review article.

In India, medicinal plants have been used to treat patients’ illnesses according to Ayurvedaa, a holistic system of medicine that evolved some 5000 years ago.

Using medicinal herbs to prevent gum disease is becoming more widespread due to their action against inflammation and bacteria. A review by Pasupuleti in 2023 analysed 14 articles (8 research papers and 6 review papers) to establish the evidence for effectiveness of medicinal herbs for gum disease prevention.

They found that the main benefit of medicinal plants is their action against bacteria due to their alkaline nature. They also help prevent bacterial plaque build up on the teeth. Various parts of plants can help keep your gums healthy.

“Mangifera indica, Pongamia pinnata, the husk of Cocos nucifera, the root of G. glabra and Curcuma longa, leaves of Psidium guajava and Azadirachta indica, fruits of Citrus medica and Punica granatum, Ocimum Moringa oleifera extract, and pomegranate peel extract can serve as a promising alternative in managing chronic gingivitis.”

Herbal medicine can be an important addition to dental scalings in helping to maintain a healthy mouthy.
